Consider The Wildflowers: How Great His Love, How Valuable We Are
Author : Kaitlin Haines
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:25-33
This little piece of scripture lives rent free in my head at all times. It’s been the little resting place that my mind lands in each hard season. It will forever be my favorite passage of scripture, reassuring me that the Lord cares about me. That he is always going to provide.
The wildflowers.
We see in this scripture that the Lord provides for the wildflowers. So often I forget the weight of those words. But truly, they hold so much.
If you don’t know anything about wildflowers other than how beautiful they are, they are plants that grow randomly. They don’t naturally require human intervention. Simply because the Lord provides for them.
Take a moment to think about a field of wildflowers. Imagine you are walking down an old backroad, and you happen upon a field of beautiful purple, yellow, and pink flowers. The are dancing in the breeze, facing the sun. The image you are seeing if one of pure beauty. One that gives you a feeling of peace. You may see bees buzzing around, birds flying overhead. That is a picture perfect example of what we are talking about here. Wildflower fields magnify the glory of the Lord simply by just being.
Maybe I’m a little more awestruck by them than some people, but when wildflower field catches my eye, I stop and admire it. I talk about it and revel in the beauty of it. I see the Lord’s intentional design and creativity. I see something that brings me joy, just because of its appearance.
Not just beauty…purpose.
Not only do wildflowers serve the purpose of being beautiful and showing how intentional he is in his creativity and intricate design, they also serve the ecosystem surrounding them. The are food, shelter, and nesting sites for many animals. They do not lack purpose.
Yet, their life, purpose, and beauty requires no human intervention. They require nothing except to trust that the Lord will provide for them and use them as he sees fit.
“Will he not much much more clothe you?”
How beautiful is it that WE hold significantly more value to him than a wildflower, being made in his image? He cares enough about the wildflowers that he provides everything they need. He has given them purpose. They bear no fruit or do no works of faith, but he sees fit to provide for them because He cares. Yet, we often do not trust that he will provide for us because we believe we lack worth, he’s got better things to do, or he just simply doesn’t want to. We don’t trust that he will use us. We don’t trust in his planting, his watering, his timing. And because of that, we have this need to interfere. We have this human nature that believes we must step in and take control.
We doubt that we could possibly grow to that extravagant beauty, serve that great a purpose, or magnify his glory without our own interference. We doubt that he sees us as valuable enough to want to provide for us.
The enemy crawls into my mind regularly, trying to convince me that I lack value. That I am simply not enough for the Lord to want to provide. That there are more important people for him to love, to provide for, and to use. And because of him, I feel the need to interfere, as though I have the power to do it on my own.
What a liar.
If God clothes the wildflowers and we, as humans, never have to interfere and help those wildflowers grow and serve their purpose, why would we ever need to interfere in our own lives? When we interfere, it often leads to delayed blessings or even disobedience. What if we could just trust that he is good—enough to provide and bless us—and wait for what he wants for us?
How great is his love for us. How valuable we are.
If God can provide for a wildflower and magnify his glory through them, why wouldn’t he provide for you and mold you beautifully into exactly who, where, when, and what you are supposed to be?
"For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him." Psalm 103:11
His love for you is far above anything that we can comprehend. And if the God who created everything loves you, you must hold infinite value in His eyes.
Your value is unmatched in comparison to his creation. His creation was made to worship him without choice. His creation was beautifully curated to reflect his beauty, but not his image. The thing that was created most valuable, was you. And me. Because when his glory is magnified through us, it’s because we have chosen to allow him to work in and through us. Because we have chosen to trust that he is sovereign, loving, gracious, and generous. Because we have chosen Him. And that is the greatest gift. That when we choose him, he molds us into who he created us to be from the beginning of time, before sin entered the world.
You, my friend, hold so much value. And he desires to provide for you.
So, do not worry.
Your creator knows what you need. With him, you lack nothing. And His timing is perfect.
